All of the images from the below trips and talks are put onto my Negotiated Research module blog. The full transcripts from the talks are also over there.

4th October 2023 - Exeter trip

We went on a degree trip, along with the year one degree students to Exeter. Increasing my knowledge of art and illustration and visiting galleries.

We met up there and we visited the Exeter Phoenix where we had a tour by Matt Burrows, the curator of the gallery. He gave us a talk of the gallery, telling us the artists of the exhibits and what the artist was trying to do behind the art, also looking at how it had been displayed. I found this very interesting to hear and I photographed each of the pieces. The exhibition that these were included in was called the Contemporary Open, where artists can apply to be in it, and the finalists are chosen by Matt.

We also went to the Royal Albert Museum (RAMM) and we had a tour from one of the staff members there, who explained a lot of the artworks as we went around including the Young Arts Prize winner as well.

Exeter Cathedral - Janis Ridley's artwork.

We also popped into Exeter Cathedral where Janice Ridley had her exhibition as well, which was very interesting and I took photographs as well. I like her style of sculptures. Janis also came in to college to give us a talk on how she has made it to where she is now, how she works and any advice for us in the future, which I found very interesting.

January 2024 - London

So in January 2024 we visited London for the second time and some of the places that we went were the Tate Modern, and the Victoria and Albert Museum. This was very good for lots of inspiration, for seeing other people's artworks and inspiring my own artwork.

Pav also arranged a tour of University Arts London. This was eye opening as it is a huge university, and has many campus's. It had so many facilities within the art and craft realm. It made me want to hurry up and apply for universities for myself for next year.

After the tour we had a talk from a staff member about how to put together our portfolios. This was very helpful because I hadn't started mine yet.

February 2024 - Paignton Zoo

This was a visit with Katie Hawker and the illustration students. We did lots of sketching of animals, in different ways. I found lots of inspiration looking at the animals, and took lots of photographs to use as reference pictures in the future. The images are on my Negotiated Research module blog. We did some sketching exercises to get us warmed up and just basic shape exercises and different amounts of time that it took to sketch them.

As we were going around on pencil and paper, I also used my iPad to sketch on as well.

It wasn't the best day weather wise, it was a bit rainy and grey so all the animals were hiding so we didn't get any great shots of the animals that I wanted to do but I did get some good shots of rhinos which I was drawing. It was very good for inspiration, looking at forms and building animals from shapes and then building that up on top.I found seeing the animals in person very inspiring, and took lots of pictures to draw and paint from reference photos.

March 2024 - Bournemouth Aquarium - This visit was all about getting ideas for sea life for my final project, where I have written a children's story about sea life. I used the creatures I saw as ideas and a basis for the characters I have used in my book. I took lots of photographs to refer back to.

Laura Wall Talk

Laura came to give us a talk on how she got to where she is now, it was so interesting hearing all of the things that she went through, good and bad. She had lots of advice for us, but I think it was particularly helpful to me because I have started a print on demand website to sell my art on, and I am also writing a children's book that I hope to get published one day.

I feel like Laura Walls talk and chat in the classroom before was so beneficial and interesting to me. I felt inspired, like what I want to do is possible, and the ways I can help myself if ingenious advice from someone who has been there. I will be referring back tot this advice regularly in my own career. I have started a print on demand website, printing my designs onto products, and I am also writing a children’s book as well.

Matt Burrows Talk

Matt came to do a talk on curating galleries and exhibitions for us. I found his talk very interesting as we had to plan out how we would hang our own work for our exhibition. He had lots of useful advice to give us. After the talk in the auditorium, we had a with the group planning the exhibition, 8 of us, and then we each had a turn to talk to him individually, and propose how we want to display our work so that he can help guide us and give any helpful suggestions.
